Hiking Gloves

Winter hiking gloves need to fulfil three very specific roles . . . . warmth, insulation and water resistance. Your hands are at real risk from exposure to the cold and damp . . . even frostbite.

Choosing Hiking Gloves

When you’re choosing a new pair of hiking gloves you need to think very carefully about the types of temperatures you will realistically be hiking in. If you’re the sort of hiker who likes nothing more than to head off into the wilderness when the weather is at its most “arctic like” then you’ll need a serious pair of hiking gloves – or two. Just as you do when you’re choosing hiking socks and any other cold weather hiking clothes, you need to plan on layers. As far as keeping warm is concerned – layers are the future! Layers provide excellent insulation for your hands, so think about buying not only a pair of waterproof, windproof hiking gloves but also a thin “base layer” pair of gloves for when the temperature drops even further.  They also come in very handy (handy . . . get it?) when you have to take off your cumbersome waterproof outer gloves, your hands won’t be exposed to the elements even when you’re doing those fiddly little jobs like fastening up your zippers.

Hmmmm, she seems to be more interested in her socks!

That’s a good tip. Always carry spare gloves, and if your gloves get wet don’t leave them to freeze overnight. Cheers dude.
