Hiking & Trail Hats

An Essential Part Of Your Hiking Gear

It used to be believed that the majority of your body heat was lost through your head . . . some said only 10%, some said 45 – 50% and others said that 75% of your body heat disappeared up through the top of your head if you weren’t wearing some sort of hat. Now, scientists and other men in white coats have officially dispelled these beliefs (not sure what the official figure is now . . . it depends on which scientist or person in a white lab coat you believe) but nevertheless we all know the benefit of how much warmer your entire body will feel if you just pull on a hat. Hat hair is a very small price to pay for added comfort and warmth on the hiking trails.

Hiking & trail hats are brilliant for many different types of weather you know, not just keeping your head warm (and your hair from blowing in the breeze). They can keep you warm, they can keep the sun out of your eyes and off the top of your head, they can stop the wind from whistling through your ears, they can prevent the raindrops from dripping down the back of your neck (I hate that) . . . yes, “horses for courses” and “hats for all seasons” – couldn’t think of anything to rhyme with hats which wasn’t extremely rude. That reminds me of a particular hat which was purchased in haste by a member of our hiking party who had forgotten his trail hat (obviously hadn’t written a backpacking checklist) and needed to buy another one in a hurry. The only way that I can describe this hat is that he soon earned himself a new trail name – “The Twat in the Hat” – sorry Dr Seuss, but we couldn’t resist it.

Hiking and trail hats

The hiking weather throws up many different challenges along the trail, so no wonder there are lots of different types of hiking and trail hats to choose from;

Wow, they’ve got a great collection of groovy hats.
